home improvement tipsAre you getting ready to remodel your kitchen or bathroom? How about completely renovating your entire house? If so, here are some tips from Sacramento-based Bill Carter, vice president and president elect of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry:

Don’t be in a hurry. Get a few bids from different contractors.

Be realistic about your costs and budget.

Check your contractor’s license.

Investigate your contractor with neighbors and friends. Meet with the contractor and get that person on board early.

Make sure your contractor has current liability insurance.

Get a building permit from your local city building department. (A permit is necessary for most remodeling work, but not for smaller, cosmetic home improvements.)

Make sure you have a good set of plans in place.

Make sure you have an open line of communication with your contractor.
